Investors were surprised during the Global Financial Crisis that mortgage securitizations were exposed to larger default rates than corporate bonds given the same credit rating.

This paper presents a parsimonious model attributing deviations of default rates from expected default probabilities implied by credit ratings to systematic risk. Conditions, under which the systematic risk of securitized tranches of pools is higher than that of single name debt instruments with the same rating are identified. An extensive empirical study analyzes a unique and comprehensive data set, which includes ratings, yield spreads, defaults and control variables for securitizations and corporate bonds.

The analysis finds evidence that financial instruments may be exposed to different levels of systematic risk given the same rating. Therefore, credit ratings do not provide comprehensive information on the degree of systematic risk. An analysis of yield spreads at origination finds empirical evidence that fixed income investors (contrary to credit rating agencies) include systematic risk in the pricing of financial instruments.

Edinburghs PRMIA chapter in partnership with Edinburgh University Business School is pleased to announce a panel event to debate this and other related questions.

Models are now an integral part of the modern financial institutions armoury in understanding, measuring, monitoring and reporting risk. But models themselves will only ever be an estimate. Additionally they can be badly parameterised, misused and built on assumptions which can quickly become out of date as markets change direction.

This free seminar is aimed primarily at graduate recruiters. It aims to give individuals and employers an opportunity to find out what the recent UK Border Agency visa changes mean and how they are affected.

Most of the session will be given over to a presentation by Dearson Winyard International (DWi) on the Tier2 (General) visa category of the points based immigration system.

DWi is a specialist organisation providing comprehensive advice and guidance to individual and corporate clients on the complexities of UK immigration policy and work visas.

Changes to the points based immigration system (PBS) were introduced by UKBA in April 2012 and have the resulted in the removal of the Tier 1 Post Study Work visa route. This means that graduates from outside the European Economic Area can no longer arrange their own visas independently in order to work in the UK after completing their studies.

Employers can still hire international talent via the Tier 2 route and immigration specialists from DWi will explain the process.

Talent Scotland’s Relocation Advisory Service will outline how they can help employers to navigate the visa landscape.

The University’s Careers Service will then outline how we can support employers to source talented international graduates. There will be a Q&A session followed by a networking lunch.

To register please email employers@ed.ac.uk

The Third Sector in a Time of Risk and Uncertainty. This international workshop is a celebration of the contribution and continuing involvement of Irvine Lapsley to third sector studies. At a time of great uncertainty in the global economy and the impact of this upon local communities, this workshop will bring together the cutting edge research to consider the impact of this uncertainty upon the third sector. It will seek to evaluate whether these organisations are 'at risk' along a number of dimensions - and how they are responding to these risks. The foremost third sector researchers from across Europe will present at the workshop, together with a panel of leading directors and chief executives from the third sector in Scotland. Together, they will enable a discussion about 'whether the third sector is at risk'.

The workshop is the first of a pair of events intended to look at how the third sector is responding to the global economic crisis. It is intended to researchers, managers in the third sector and local government and civil servants and policy makers in government. The second workshop, with further US and European speakers will take place on 14 June. The programme for this second event will be issued shortly.

Attendance at both events is free of charge but prior booking is essential, as places are strictly limited.

We are pleased to invite you to our third Sovereign Wealth Focus – Edinburgh Dialogue on Tuesday 12th June at the University of Edinburgh Business School.

The recent evolution of global capital markets has been dramatic, and as new capital flows emerge, a key question remains the future role and scope of both sovereign wealth and national reserve portfolios – both in terms return on assets and foreign direct investment. Drawing in a range of senior speakers from all sides of the equation, this year’s the Edinburgh Dialogue will focus on Strategies for National Reserve Portfolio Management, see attachedment.

Edinburgh Dialogue events are designed as neutral forums in which representatives of sovereign wealth funds, managers of national reserves and central banks can interact in confidence with global capital markets institutions and respected academics and analysts. The events are run according to the Chatham House rule, which we understand to mean that any comments made during the conference cannot be quoted externally without the express permission of the author.

This event will focus on Larry Sullivan’s shared value initiatives in his businesses and how he sees social responsibility not as tokenistic but truly embedded into his companies. He will discuss creating economic as well as societal value as demonstrated by his latest venture: The Cookie Bar; a social enterprise in Surrey. He will speak on the importance of various principles, processes and techniques that he used as part of starting and establishing businesses around the world including the significance of building a team comprised of balanced personalities.

Larry is Chairman of COINS, a global software solutions company; he is also founder of five other niche market software houses. His companies include Total Objects and OASIS Solutions, where he is also Chairman. His past directorships include CSBI SA (Poland), Computerland Poland, CSBI EE (Russia), CSB Meridian, and Matrix Ventures, a venture capital trust. In 2004 Larry also funded and established the not for profit Stepping Stones School, a school for children with hemiplegia and mild to moderate learning difficulties. He established the COINS Foundation in 2006 to galvanise the charitable activities of his companies. Last year Larry launched The Cookie Bar; a social enterprise with profits going back to schools and projects supported by the COINS Foundation. He intends to open a second Cookie Bar in the City of London; linking them to schools and running them as social enterprises and helping children to achieve social and economic independence.

The rationale for the Edinburgh Information Infrastructures event is to discuss the development and evolution of new kinds of information infrastructures (IIs). In particular, the aim is to consider how as social scientists we might go about studying large-scale infrastructural developments. We want to investigate whether (and how) new emerging technological formations have consequences for existing theories and methodologies? Do they have characteristics, capacities and dynamics that require the development of new concepts and tools? Or will existing socio-technical approaches and frameworks simply “scale-up”, to paraphrase the prominent sociologist of science Karin Knorr Cetina.

This is the second Edinburgh workshop on IIs in recent years. The first, considered what was then emerging visions of the future. Today, several years later, things are still far from clear. Some of the computing models set out back then have failed to materialise in the way anticipated (SaaS), whilst others not predicted have begun to emerge. We see this workshop as taking this agenda forward through bringing together discussions of technological developments with talks on potential approaches and methods for their study.
